They held that wood, fire, earth, metal, and water were the basic substances constituting the material world. These five basic substances were considered an indispensable part of daily life. They also noted that the material world is in a constant state of flux due to the dynamic movement and mutual antagonism of yin and yang factors. The ancient Chinese applies these two theories in the medical field to explain the physiological activities and pathological changes of the human body, and to serve as a guide to the clinical treatment on the basis of syndrome differentiation. These theories have become in important component of traditional Chinese medicine. - UNDER CONSTRUCTION - TCM History --back-- Diagnosis FIVE ELEMENTS:Every element (fire, water, earth, wood, metal) has its own characteristics. It is strongly connected to emotions, internal organs, a taste / flavour, and so on.. we will have a look on the most important connections, which are, connections to internal organs, taste and emotions.EMOTIONS:Fire, which belongs to the heart, is joy (can be pathological, for example malicious joy)Earth, which belongs to the spleen, is worryMetal, which belongs to the lung, is griefWater, which belongs to the kidney, is fearWood, which belongs to the liver, is angerWe can say very simple, that one emotion (lets say fear) over a long period of time can have effect on our kidney. same otherway round, if the kidney is weak, we can be more fearful. To ask about someones emotions is one of the keys to a accurate diagnosis. Emotions are what we feel every day - do we live in fear, do we worry about something. To ask about the life situation can be the key to a problems solution. Existential fear, stress at work or pessimistic thinking can have effect on our health. There are different cycles in the 5 element system, the physiological one is the nutritive cycle> fire nourishes the earth, earth nourishes the metal and so on.then we have a pathogene cycle, which is the cycle of conquest> fire conquers metal, metal conquers wood and so on...CLIENT EXAMPLE:Something most common, is a liver qi stagnation. the client would feel some, or all of these symptoms:headachesighingred eyes or eyes sensitive to wind!grumpy mood / impatientMenstrual disorders - PMS, pain, endometriosis, and so on...high blood pressureUsually these people feel very stressful and impatient. Very common is the sigh (which reliefs the stagnation for some seconds). If this liver qi stagnation exists for a long period of time it can or will make the liver (wood element) very hot - there will be too much yang in the liver. If the liver is overabundant it can follow the conquest cycle (on the picture) to have effect on the digestive system, on spleen and stomach. this people can further complain about having no appetite, burping or any of the spleen and stomach symptoms. (not to confuse with a simple spleen / stomach problem, because in our case the root problem comes from the liver).TREATMENT:The treatment in this case is to relax and cool down the liver and support the spleen and stomach. RELAX: Try to relax your emotion, do taijiquan, go for swimming or try to change your daily schedule for a not so stressful one if you can.MOVE QI: To get rid of a stagnation we have to move Qi. Moving the own body helps to move Qi: swimming, taijiquan / qi gong, jogging. acupuncture, tuina, tcm- herbs,Spicy food and some herbs help moving Qi, in our case we need cool-spicy food and herbs, because there is already too much heat in the body:peppermint tea, rose bloom tea, radish, kohlrabi, turkey, cress...for example and many more. And to support spleen and stomach we need to take care of the 3 warm meals per day.Best for spleen and stomach is to have a good and warm breakfast, like a sweet (= earth element) rice soup , or rice with (flashcooked) fruits, cornsoup, millet.FLAVOUR / TASTE:The next topic which is important is the taste of a food. In connection with the 5 elements we have:Fire, which belongs to the heart, is bitterEarth, which belongs to the spleen, is sweetMetal, which belongs to the lung, is spicyWater, which belongs to the kidney, is saltyWood, which belongs to the liver, is sourEvery taste has a different effect on the body. We can differentiate our food to yin and yang, and the tastes. the taste gives information what kind of effect it will have on our body.Bitter: drains body fluids, qi movement goes down. we can use that for clients which have too much moist in the body. (for example acne, which is a moist/heat combination)example: green tea, buckwheat,....Sweet: builds up body fluids, makes spleen and stomach strong. qi movement is center.example: carrot, potatoe,.... (not including cakes and chocolate ;)Spicy: moves qi and reliefs stagnation (used for qi stagnation), can make body more dry, qi movement is outside (for example to bring a cold outside)example: chili, mint, radish,....Salty: qi movement goes down, to build up kidney qi, softens stagnation, example: seawheed, fish, seafood,...Sour: Qi movement goes inside, to keep something (for example body fluids, if the body is too dry), not very good for losing weight, but good for too dry body. important flavour if we want to keep something. example: lemon, orange,...
