Wudang is known for the many daoist monasteries in the area and for centuries amysterious relationship has existed between daoism and wudang kung fuas early as the eastern han dydasty (25-220 ad), the mountain attracted the emporers attenbtion.during the tang dynasty (618-907), the first site of worshiop, the 5 dragon temple, was constructed.when zhu di, emporer of the ming dynasty began to build the forbidden city in beijing in the year 1416, another project of equal impoirtance to the emporer was on the way to chinas south. the building of a magnificent daoist temple.the temple under construction was more than a thousand kilometers from beijing on top of mount wudang. the emporer named his new temple tai he palace.the construction of the temple began 3 years earlier than the forbidden city, and no less than 300,000 skilled workers and craftsmen were recruited for the project.in terms of time, it woul;d turn out to be the longest construction project undertaken in the ming dynasty - taking more than 10 years to complete.when the palacewas finished there would be a saying used to refer to the greatest places of importance, the forbidden city in the north and wudang palace in the south.from the beginning of the ming dynasty all the way down to emporer zhu di, emporers of several generations have searched here for a man who had obtained the highest status of enlightment, believing that he lived oon mount wudang.
